Virtual try-on

Definition: Virtual try-on is technology that shows clothing or accessories on a shopper's body without a physical fitting: as an AI image generated from their photo, as an overlay on a phone's live camera feed, or on a 3D avatar built from their measurements. It helps judge style and colour; only measurement-based versions help with size.

What are the types of virtual try-on?

Type How it works Best for Example
AI image from a photo a model takes a photo of the person and of the garment and generates a new image of the person wearing it colour, cut and style ChatGPT “Try on”, Google “Try it on”
AR overlay an app draws the product over your live camera feed glasses, make-up, trainers retailer apps and camera filters
Measurement-based avatar a 3D body model is built from measurements, photos or a video, then dressed in a specific size comparing sizes Zalando’s Virtual Fitting Room

Can virtual try-on tell you your size?

Photo-based try-on cannot. OpenAI says its try-on images do not guarantee fit or size, and Google describes its image as an approximation and recommends checking size charts. Researchers from Google Research and the University of Washington, who published the FIT dataset in 2026, note that current try-on models default to well-fitted results regardless of the garment or person size.

Size comparison needs measurement. Zalando says its tool captures measurements from two photos or a phone video and builds an avatar on which you can see different sizes of the same item. That requires dimension data for every garment, so it covers a selected range.

What happens to your photo?

In ChatGPT and Google your photo is saved for future try-ons and can be deleted — in ChatGPT’s settings or in Google’s try-on panel. Google says it does not use try-on photos for training. With lesser-known apps, check who the data controller is and how long the photo is kept before uploading anything.
